Using the Layer Adjustment Option (Located at Layer>New Fill Adjustment Layer) we can create photo effects that do not harm the photo.

For this particular photo, we used the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast. We then paint on the mask layer created with the adjustment layer to exclude parts of the image where we didn't want that adjustment to occur.
